BIO

Like the many moons of their namesake, ABOVE JUPITER was formed from cosmic dust encircling their own hometown of Memphis, TN. In ABOVE JUPITER’s case, those particles include inspiring elements of the Memphis arts and music scene, both past and present.

Lifelong friends Noah Hand (bass) and Graham Burks, III (drums) realized early on that Noah’s pursuit of art was a perfect compliment to Graham’s multi-instrumental and production skills, and the two began writing and planning concepts for multiple music releases. As their initial batch of songs was beginning to form, the gravity of Memphis’s iconic Stax Music Academy had begun to pull them in. At Stax they connected with other talented musicians including Zariya Scullark (guitar), and another lifelong friend Desmond Coppin (keys).

Orbiting their core of Memphis soul are the diverse sounds of art-rock pioneers David Bowie and Talking Heads, to innovators of the 90s and 2000s such as Beck and Gorillaz. The animation styles of TheOdd1sOut occupy just as important of a space as the soundtracks of Toby Fox’s Undertale video game in ABOVE JUPITER’s orbit.

Above Jupiter released their debut EP “DEMO” in January of 2024. They have continued to release new music and gain new fans at a steady pace, with the singles “Two Way Sky” and “Lizard Freeway” leading up to their new full-length LP, the self-titled Above Jupiter, which was released on May 10, 2024.

The young group — its members are 15 or 16, still in high school and have all passed through the Stax Music Academy — released its self-titled debut album earlier this summer.

Memphis Flyer | Above Jupiter’s Big Beat Art Pop

These high schoolers make music that transcends space and time.

What does “New Wave” even mean anymore? Unsure if younger generations even know the genre label, I asked myself that question recently as I spoke to the founders of Above Jupiter, a young band in every sense of the word. Instead of going retro, I asked them what they would call the choppy, stomping, synth-tinged, and hook-filled music they made — so reminiscent of sounds that captivated me in the 1980s. Graham Burks III, the group’s singer and drummer, didn’t miss a beat. “We’ve been calling it art pop.”
